Sumdrill Handler is a person who is capable to subdue a Sumdrill of any sort, harvesting from it what they need and then releasing the Sumdrill relatively unharmed to resume its task of drilling the ground of Calisto One for Drill-Core.
We find ourselves on the grounds of Calisto One. Humans are living inside of their Earth-Ships in which they arrived from Earth. Manufactured Sumdrills come in and out of the ships through the caves underneath that they dug out themselves.
Sumdrills come in the shapes of Vreten.kops, eight-limbed creatures with legs, arms and wings, Kormo.dubs, four-limbed creatures with legs and clawed wings, and Guja.rovs, limbless, snake-like creatures. Guja.rovs are digging shallow making the surface of Calisto One less rock-hard. Vreten..kops are digging in the middle creating caves. Kormo.dubs are digging deep underground trying the find the center of Calisto One.
All of them are owned and produced by Drill-Core. Sumdrills are said to be biological drilling machines without a mind of their own. More like ants than anything else, conducted by their Queen as a unified Hive with all Units behaving and looking alike.
